A couple of months ago, we wrote about the Zagat Survey, which lists some of Utah's top fine-dining spots. Altogether we got nearly votes spread among plus restaurants, which tells us there are lots of places out there, and our readers like variety. There was no one place that captured dozens of votes. Cafe Rio has managed to build up a following in just a few years. George in , the second in Provo in But be forewarned: This is not a quiet sit-down restaurant where a server patiently explains each menu item or fills your water glass a dozen times.

You stand in line to order and move along the line as your food is prepared. Around noon last Wednesday, customers were lined up all the way out the door. The line moves pretty fast, because most of the customers seem to be regulars and know what they want. If you don't, it's a little intimidating when the cooks mutter such things as "Black or pinto? But once you figure it out, you can get your food custom-made with lightning speed.

By the time you've gone through the line, your food is all ready, and you have directed its preparation all the way through. Stanley, a formally trained chef with 35 years of experience, operated a chain of full-service restaurants in Austin, Texas, before he decided to strike out on his own. The name "Cafe Rio" comes from the traditional Rio Grande Valley recipes and techniques used, he said. In a review last year, Deseret News restaurant critic Stephanie Tanner-Brown gave Cafe Rio four out of five stars, and said, "Cafe Rio tends to stress the flavors of its sauces and the use of fresh seasonings.

A pretty fair price, but a few customers said they'd like to see a "combo" meal with the drink and a few chips and salsa thrown in. The concept isn't for everyone. Paula Bergeson said she prefers Joe Vera's in Provo. Sweet Tomatoes 7 votes : This soup-salad-pasta bar earned three out of five stars in a previous review from Tanner-Brown: "Though I'm critical, I still think Sweet Tomatoes is a better choice than fast food, yet comparable in price and just as fast.

Atkins dieters beware — it's a veggie and carbohydrate-lover's paradise.

The children can choose just what they feel like eating, in an appropriate amount. The atmosphere is nice, family-friendly, and the price is very reasonable. Another plus for bargain-hunters: The restaurant chain often runs discount coupons in newspaper ads.

But not everybody likes buffet-style food. Fans, however, are hoping Sweet Tomatoes will expand from two locations in the south end of the valley S. State and S. Union Park Ave. The Mandarin 7 votes. It would seem after our normal wait of two hours anything would tempt our taste buds. El Farol 6 votes : "It's a family-run place — has been for decades," wrote Holly Mullen of Cottonwood, who deems it "Good, clean and cheap.

I would like to know how they prepare it. A big plus here is the quiet atmosphere. Rio Grande Cafe 5 votes : Readers say this is a great value for Mexican food. La Frontera 5 votes : "I could eat here every night and never tire of it," wrote Norma Hendrickson. It is nothing fancy, but the food is always fresh and delicious with ample portions. Some of the wimpier persuasion find their homemade salsa and burrito sauce a little too spicy, but it's that kind of burn that tastes so wonderful! If you prefer the milder taste, order the huge lettuce and tomato garnish and a side of rice to mix with the entree to cut the heat factor a bit.

Olive Garden 5 votes : "Always good, the unlimited soup and salad keeps you coming back," wrote Debbie DeWitt.
